No Title - Class 401 - Reach

The purpose of Class 401 – Reach is to help you learn how to share your faith in a God-honoring, people-respecting way. A lot of us don't regularly share our faith because we've seen too many examples of Christians beating unbelievers over the head with their Bibles, telling them they're going to hell. Who wants to be like that? Another reason we shy away from sharing our faith is the fear that we don't have all the answers. What if someone asks me a question that I don't know the answer to. Many believers want to share the gospel with their family and friends, but just simply don't know how.

If you've wrestled with any of these issues, Class 401 is for you. In 401 you will get a picture of God's heart for the lost and you'll learn the basics of personal evangelism. You'll walk away from 401 with a variety of applicable ways to share your faith in powerful, yet non-threatening ways. You'll also catch a vision of what is means to be a "world-class Christian" as you get an overview of world missions with practical ways that you can be involved in winning the lost all over the world. One of the greatest joys any of us will ever have is helping someone find faith in Christ. Are you ready for the adventure?

In 101 – Connect, you'll find out why the Vineyard is a great place to call home. A Christian without a church family has often been likened to a football player without a team, a tuba player without an orchestra, or a child without a family. You were created to be a part of God's family and we at the Vineyard are excited to be a place that you can call home. A place you can belong. Class 101 will introduce you to our family; our history, our values, our vision, and our structure. By the end of the class you'll have a clear understanding of where we came from, who we are, why we do what we do, and where we're going. During the class there will also be an invitation to join the Vineyard family.

At the Vineyard, we believe every member is a minister. We all get to play! There are no "little people" in the body of Christ, and there are no "insignificant ministries." Every ministry is important. We are committed to helping people find what they were uniquely designed to do in the body of Christ. In Class 301 – Serve, we'll use the SHAPE process to understand 5 elements (spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences) that determine what we were "shaped" for.

All of us at one time or another have had to perform a task that just went against the grain of our very being. You kind of feel like a square peg in a round hole. The same thing happens when we end up doing things in ministry that we weren't designed for. We just end up frustrated and sometimes decide not to do anything at all. But God has been molding and shaping you for ministry since you were born. That's why it's so important to figure out what it is that He uniquely designed you to do.

301 is a very practical, engaging class that will help you understand your personal SHAPE and what ministry is the best fit for you. When you minister in a manner that is consistent with the personality God gave you, you will experience fulfillment, satisfaction, and fruitfulness. It feels good when you do exactly what God made you to do!

The New Testament makes it clear that it is God's will for every believer to grow up. To become spiritually mature. It is also clear that spiritual maturity doesn't happen overnight. It's a journey that we'll be engaged in for the rest of our lives. Class 201 – Grow, is designed to help you take the next steps in your spiritual growth. There are all kinds of habits we need to develop as we grow to spiritual maturity. In Class 201 we'll focus on the habits and skills that are foundational to the life of all Christians. Will you come out of this class spiritually mature? No way! But you'll have the practical knowledge to get started on the journey, as well as an idea of what tools and resources are available to help you along the way.

So if you're ready to hit the road to spiritual maturity, join us for Class 201 and learn the practical action steps and everyday habits that will keep you growing for the rest of your life!

We offer "Stay Married Insurance," a national movement committed to helping marriages to be successful. When couples invest in Stay Married Insurance, the divorce rate greatly decreases, thus helping couples "stay married".

Two components of the "Insurance" are the 2 Becoming 1 class and the Prepare/Enrich Inventories.

2 Becoming 1 - The Incredible Journey is a 6-week marriage preparation class taught by 5 couples, each bringing their unique experiences to the topics. These topics are based on the top reasons people struggle in marriage.

· Week 1- Beginning the Journey- Keith and Cheryl Kaczor
· Week 2- Communication- Lloyd and Amy Klages
· Week 3- Conflict Resolution- Phil and Susan Brossman
· Week 4- Roles and Responsibilities- Tony and Lisa Aprea
· Week 5- Budgeting and Finances- Don and Julie Meredith
· Week 6- Sex and Intimacy- Don and Julie Meredith

Prepare and Enrich is part of Life Innovations, a national organization that researches marriage and married life. The inventories are a result of their research of 21,501 surveyed couples. They identify the couples' strengths and areas of growth. We then work through these growth areas with the couples. As a result, the couples gain a greater understanding of how their lives will interact. Therefore, a foundation is created to build their marriage on.

The PREPARE/ENRICH Program: You begin by taking one of five PREPARE/ENRICH couple inventories which will identify your strengths as a couple. You then meet for 3-6 feedback sessions with a professional trained on the program. This professional uses a computer report about your couple relationship to help you build a stronger relationship.
Each PREPARE/ENRICH Inventory is a 165-item questionnaire assessing relationship strength and growth areas in 20 categories.
The program is
· Scientifically developed and designed to assess relationship strength and growth areas
· Designed specifically to help couples get their marriage off to a better start and enrich their marriage.

How many times have you said to yourself, "I know I should pray more, but I just don't know how"? You know that prayer is life-changing, and yet it's so hard to get started. If those statements ring true in your life, help is near. The Prayer Ministry at the Vineyard is dedicated to helping people who desire to deepen their relationship with Christ through prayer. This is accomplished through teaching, mentoring and discipling; learning within a community of faith to hear and respond to God.

The Prayer Ministry is also committed to intercessory prayer on behalf of the church, the community, the nation and the world. From weekly gatherings to monthly prayer walks for the City of Wheeling, there are plenty of ways to get involved with the Prayer Ministry. A prayer team meets after each of our weekend services, as well as Wednesday mornings at the church from 7:30 – 8:30 am. Check out the on-line church calendar for other upcoming Prayer Ministry events.

If you are interested in learning more about how to jump start your prayer life, or if you would like to get involved with the Prayer Ministry, please come to one of our Prayer Ministry events or contact the church at 242.0463, or you can click here to email the prayer team.

Alpha is a great way to get involved at the Vineyard. This 10 week course is designed to be a safe place to ask questions, explore tough issues and make some great friends. The Alpha Course tackles some of the key questions of the Christian faith. Questions like, who is Jesus, why did He die, how and why should I pray, and how can I be sure of my faith. Alpha introduces the person of Jesus in a way that engages the mind as well as the heart and leaves room for some interesting and animated small group discussions.

A typical Alpha evening starts out with dinner at 6:00 followed by a talk via video and then on to small group discussions ending at 9:00 sharp. Many course participants have said Alpha is the fastest and best 3 hours of their week.

We run Alpha 3 times/year at the Vineyard and regularly have about 100 guests taking the course. If you're interested in coming on an Alpha Course or would like more information, please give Jenn Lewis a call at the church office at 242.0463 or click here to send her an email.

How To Do A Mercy Ministry In Your Church - Mercy Ministry How To

Across the Street Mission FieldsMy name is Don McAfee. My wife Fran and I coordinate the Vineyard Church Mercy Ministry in Wheeling, West Virginia. I am a Social Worker. I am licensed to practice in the states of Ohio and West Virginia and Fran, my bride of 35 years, is a certified teacher in the state of West Virginia. I have spent the past 20 years working with the needy. I have something to share with you that may help you minister to the needy in your area. Did you know that food stamps cannot be used to purchase toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, laundry soap, dish soap, bath soap or any other hygiene item? It is against the law to use food stamps for anything but food. That is why we established Free Stores and that is why they work so well. We provide the populations of some of our local HUD complexes with basic hygiene items. We do it in a fair and un-intrusive manner that maintains a level playing field for all who live in these communities. In doing so, we open the door for all kinds of ministries. Free Stores provide services that slowly but surely break down the barriers of oppression. We have been operating Free Stores since 1992. Free Store concepts can be used anywhere but we have found that Free Stores work best in HUD Housing Communities. We currently operate five Free Stores in HUD communities. There is a high percentage of the residential population living in these communities who are dependent on food stamps. We simply provide a safe, nurturing environment in which they have the opportunity to start trusting. When trust is established, people begin to participate with us in prayer. They begin to pray for their communities and each other. They start hanging out with us because they see the love of Jesus in our teams. They ask questions. They ask us for personal prayer. They start to reveal their personal wounds and chains of oppression. At that point, we have the opportunity to be part of God's restoration and reconciliation process in the lives of the individuals we serve. Once trust is established, we have a multitude of servant evangelism opportunities for the entire church. We once had the opportunity to paint a playground in what was at that time Wheeling's most dangerous neighborhood. The city of Wheeling had given up on this playground. They said that they had repaired and painted the playground many times. It would only last about two weeks before someone destroyed it again. We had individuals from 13 different residential families who volunteered to help us paint that playground. We scheduled a Saturday morning to paint and all 13 volunteers met us at the playground. The city of Wheeling, Grounds and Parks Division, provided the paint and paintbrushes and we painted the whole thing. That playground was never again vandalized because the people who lived in that community would not allow it. They took ownership of it and they protected it. One of the older gentlemen who lived there daily volunteered to pick up any trash and he kept that playground spotless. The children used it every day until the playground and the community were torn down for a Hope VI Project. We watched the character of that same community change from a war zone to a neighborhood where people talked to each other. We were part of the reason for a 17% drop in crime in that community in a one-year period. God was restoring and reconciling his people and we got to be part of his work. It was amazing to watch. Isaiah 58:1-12 is our road map. I believe God has instructed me to present this opportunity to you. Any church can do what we have been doing. We are hoping to give away what God has given us. Should you be interested, I will be happy to provide additional information. We may be reached at: WWW.VINEYARDWHEELING.COM or beemcafee2@verison.net. Thanks for visiting our website. I hope the information you find in these pages will help introduce you to who we are and what we do here at the Vineyard in Wheeling.

We have made it our goal that everything we do would build into our mission to "help people find and follow God." The atmosphere here is casual, relaxed, friendly and fun. Everyone is welcome and accepted. Maybe you have just begun to question what life is all about. Maybe you're wondering if God is real and if He is - does He really care. Maybe you've already decided to live your life for God and are just looking for a community to grow with. Wherever you are in the journey, we'd love for you to come and share in what we believe is the adventure of a lifetime.

As you browse our site, you'll see there are many ways to get connected at the Vineyard. Our Next Step Class series is a great way to explore some of the areas we feel are central to our growth as Christians.

If I can be of any service to you, please give me a call at the church or catch me after one of our Sunday celebrations. I look forward to seeing you and may the immeasurable love of Jesus fill you today and every day.

If you're interested in coming on an Alpha Course or would like more information, please visit the Alpha Wheeling Web Site or give Jenn Lewis a call at the church office at 242.0463 or click here to email Jenn.

MOPS - MOPS

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)
MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers. MOPS International exists to meet the needs of every mom - urban, suburban and rural moms; stay-at-home and working moms; teen, single and married moms - moms with different lifestyles who all share a similar desire to be the very best moms they can be! MOPS recognizes that the years from infancy through kindergarten are foundational in a mother-child relationship and are filled with unique needs.
MOPS helps moms through relationships established in the context of local groups that provide a caring atmosphere for today's mother of young children. MOPS is dedicated to the message that "mothering matters" and that moms of young children need encouragement during these critical and formative years.
MOPS is about
Celebrating motherhoodMeeting needsMaking connectionsExperiencing God's love... through relationships and resources

The MOPS program includes time to socialize with other moms, a program designed for moms, and a MOPPETS curriculum for the children. Presentations from MOPS mentors or other speakers offer inspiration and information that is relevant to the life of a mom. Through craft projects and life skill presentations, women are encouraged to experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from trying and finishing new things. The intimate and accepting atmosphere of a small group offers moms a chance to share their successes, questions, and concerns. It is during these times that a mom realizes that she is not alone, and lifelong friendships are formed.
MOPPETS
Children are cared for during MOPS meetings in a parallel program called MOPPETS. Snacks are provided and age-appropriate activities are planned for each meeting. Children are given time to interact with each other and express themselves through play, music, crafts, and through learning a lesson focusing on Biblical principles and values.

Practicing Hospitality - Hospitality

In Galatians 6:2 the Bible tells us to, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Sounds great – but how do we carry each other's burdens in a real and practical way? The Hospitality Ministry at the Vineyard makes this a really easy task. From taking a meal to someone who is recovering from surgery to making a "no-sew" baby blanket to welcome a new little bundle of joy, there are plenty of opportunities to help each other in times of need. Even if you are no Julia Child and would have a hard time boiling water much less putting a meal together, there is a place for you in the Hospitality Ministry. For someone who just had surgery or a baby, or is just plain sick, even a store bought meal or a pizza is a blessing. Providing food for a family that has recently lost a loved one is another way to serve in the Hospitality Ministry.

Romans 12:13 say's, "Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality." There is no better time than now to start practicing! To get involved (whether you want to serve in Hospitality or you are in need of Hospitality) contact the Hospitality Ministry by calling the church at 242.0463 or click here to send us an email.

Did you know that a person decides whether or not they will come back to a particular church within the first 5 minutes of driving in the parking lot? That's why, at the Vineyard, we have a whole team of people dedicated to making sure visitors feel welcomed and at home, from finding a spot in the parking lot to finding the nursery and Sunday school rooms.

If you want to "help people find and follow God" by helping them find their way in and around the church, the Front Door Ministry is the place for you! There are all kinds of ways to get involved with this team. You may have noticed the friendly greeters welcoming you to our weekend services, or the Jitney driver giving you front door service, or the person behind the coffee bar keeping the coffee flowing. It's easy to take these jobs for granted, but if they weren't being done, it would certainly be noticeable.

There is a place for you in the Front Door Ministry – so get involved! Become a part of helping people find and follow God in a very real and practical way. For more information, give us a call at the church at 242.0463 or click here to send us an email.

Welcome to Mercy Ministry - Mercy Ministry

"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?" Isaiah 58:6-7

The Bible leaves no doubt of God's heart for the poor and oppressed. It also leaves no doubt that we, His people, are called to help the poor, feed the hungry and clothe the naked. There is a group of people at the Vineyard Church in Wheeling that have answered that call and have made a way for other's to get involved in this "mercy ministry" as well.

The Mercy Ministry is committed to the restoration and reconciliation of the downtrodden poor and oppressed residents of the Wheeling area. One man's vision several years ago that led him to Isaiah 58:1-12 has blossomed into a ministry that touches hundreds of lives each month through Free Stores held at 4 different low-income communities.

The prime directive of the Mercy Ministry is and always has been to build relationship followed by restoration and reconciliation of lives and communities. Free Stores are a great way to accomplish this goal. The Free Stores provide residents with items such as laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, bath soap, toilet paper and toothpaste. Children are ministered to through crafts, games, and school supplies. Hospitality is shared through cookies, coffee and punch, and when available, a nurse provides blood pressure screenings, and a beautician gives free haircuts. Prayer is also offered to the residents.

In addition to the Free Store, the Mercy Ministry meets as a small group on the fourth Thursday of each month to share experiences at the Free Store, seek God's direction and have some fun!

If you have any questions or you would like to be a part of the Mercy Ministry, please give Don and Fran McAfee a call at the church at 242.0463 or click here to email the mercy ministry.

Raising teens in today's world can be a difficult and sometimes heartbreaking challenge. One of the goals of the Senior High Student Ministry is to assist parents in their efforts to raise up young men and women who are passionate about their relationship with Jesus, and who learn to live out relationships with family, friends and others as Christ commands. The Biblical model establishes parents as the primary educators of their children (Deuteronomy 6:5 – 9). We believe the role of the leaders of the senior high student ministry is to come alongside parents and walk with them as they undertake this most important task.

If there is any way we can be of assistance to you, please contact Jim Adams at the church at 242.0463 or click here to send him an email.

High School Home Page - High School Ministry

Being in high school is hard. Not just in the classroom. I'm talking about in the hallways, on the basketball court, in the band room, in homeroom. Sometimes it feels like everything and everyone is against you. That's why the mission of the Senior High Student Ministry at the Vineyard is to help students find and follow God. Because we know that knowing God makes being in high school easier. He's not giving out test answers, but He is giving out strength for the day, hope for your future and the invitation to come along on the adventure of a lifetime.

If you want to see what real life is all about, come and check out what's happening at the Senior High Student Ministry. We're looking at the Bible and the life of Jesus through the lens of the reality of our day. We're learning about life by living it out in a community of other students who want to know God, know how to live for Him and help others find and follow Him. We're experiencing a love so deep that it changes us every day. Yeah, being in high school is hard. But through the powerful love of Jesus, we're finding ways to make it just a little easier. You might even say we're having the time of our lives!

Celebrate Recovery - Celebrate Recovery

Celebrate Recovery is a unique and powerful program that has helped literally thousands of people all over the country break free from the "hurts, habits, and hang-ups" that have kept them from experiencing life as God intends. By working and applying the 8 Recovery Principles (mirrored in the 12 steps), addictive, compulsive and dysfunctional behaviors are replaced with peace, serenity, joy, and most importantly, a stronger relationship with God and others. As participants progress through the program, they discover the personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power - Jesus Christ, the one and only true Higher Power.

Celebrate Recovery's Friday night large group gathering is held at the Vineyard Church and typically looks like this:

7:00 - 8:00pm
•General meeting with all groups. This is a larger group gathering with musical worship, a teaching or a testimony.

8:00 - 9:00pm
•Small groups meeting. This is the time to get together with others of similar hurts, habits and hang-ups to share and listen.

9:00- 10:30pm
•Coffee House. Please come for coffee and dessert. This is a great time to get 1 on 1 with others in your group, or just hang out and unwind with good people. Childcare is available from 7:00 to 9:30.

For more information on Celebrate Recovery, click on the tabs on the left or click here to email us, or better yet, come and see what we're all about this Friday night. You'll be glad you did!

Christ-Centered 12 Steps - Biblical 12 Steps

1.We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors. That our lives had become unmanageable.

"I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out." (Romans 7:18)

2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

"For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose." (Philippians 2:13)

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship." (Romans 12:1)

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

"Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD." (Lamentations 3:40)

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs.

"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." (James 5:16a)

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." (James 4:10)

7. Humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

"Do to others as you would have them do to you." (Luke 6:31)

9. Made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift." (Matthew 5:23-24)

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" (1 Corinthians 10:12)

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and power to carry that out.

"Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly." (Colossians 3:16a)

12. Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and practice these principles in all our affairs.

"Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted." (Galatians 6:1)

All scripture quoted from the New International Version.

Serenity Prayer - Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is;
not as I would have it;
trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to your will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Other Focus - Rules & Why's

• Concentrating on others needs and problems
• Analyzing their motives and behavior
• Asking questions of others
• Telling stories about what he/she did

NEGATIVE RESULTS
• Helps us avoid our own issues
• Makes us observers, not participants
• Puts a safe (and lonely) distance between ourselves and others

RULE 1: Keep your sharing focused on your own thoughts and feelings. Please limit your sharing to 3-5 minutes.

RULE 2: We are here to support one another. We will not attempt to "fix" one another.

GOALS
• Work on self
• Share personal needs, feelings, ideas and problems
• Allow time for all those who need share

• Telling outsiders what was said or done in group
• Gossip disguised as a prayer request

NEGATIVE RESULTS
• Violates trust and safety
• Makes members afraid to share risky material

RULE 3: Anonymity and confidentiality are basic requirements. What is shared in the group stays in the group.

GOALS
• Celebrate Recovery is a safe place

Cross - Talk - Rules & Why's

• Interrupting people, asking questions, having a dialogue with one other member of the group

NEGATIVE RESULTS
• Members fear that they won't be able to finish sharing
• That their ideas are not valued
• That they won't get a chance to speak

RULE 4: There will be no cross-talk please. Cross-talk is when two individuals engage in a dialogue, excluding all others. Each person is free to express feelings without interruption.

RULE 5: Offensive language has no place in a Christ-centered recovery group.

GOALS
• Listen respectfully to what others choose to share

Life was never meant to be lived alone. We were made to live in community. Coming to a weekend service is great, but unless you get connected in the body of Christ, you'll miss out on some of the purposes God has planned for you. This is where the Pastor's Coffee, the Next Step and Alpha come in.
